Bill Introduced Authorizes Customs and Border Protection Staffing Expansion

June 17, 2016

Representative Bennie Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the House Homeland Security Committee, recently introduced legislation, H.R. 5256, that would authorize the hiring of 2,000 additional CBP Officers and 600 additional CBP Agriculture Specialists over the next two years, among other provisions.  Six members of the committee have cosponsored H.R. 5256.  NTEU strongly supports this legislation and sent Representative Thompson the attached letter of support.

As you know, the most recent results of CBP’s Workload Staff Model — factoring in the additional 2,000 CBP Officers from the Fiscal Year (FY) 2014 appropriations — show a need for an additional 2,107 CBP Officers through FY 2017.Separately, the Agriculture Resource Allocation Model calculates a need for an additional 631 CBP Agriculture Specialists for a total of 3,045.

NTEU will work with Representative Thompson and other supporters in the House to push for passage of this important legislation to hire these additional CBP Officers and Agriculture Specialists.
