Southwest Border K-9 TDY’s to Include Rental Cars for Non-Duty Hours

November 9, 2017

At NTEU’s request, K-9 CBP Officers on 60-day temporary duty assignments (TDY) to the Southwest border will be allowed to rent vehicles for use during non-duty hours. The Office of Field Operations agreed to the rental vehicles as a safety precaution, so that Officers would not have to use their marked K-9 vehicles when they are off-duty.

NTEU made the rental car request during the OFO-NTEU Labor-Management Forum.

During the October forum, NTEU also learned that CBP does not envision additional annual K-9 TDYs. However, CBP has the right to schedule them again based on operational considerations.

The agency is still considering NTEU’s position that COPRA overtime be used to compensate Officers for the care of their canine outside the regular shift, and not FLSA overtime. NTEU will keep you updated on this issue.
